Flight route from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Selous (multiple airstrips)
The ‘Mighty’ Selous is the largest game reserve of Tanzania and is awe inspiring due to its untamed nature, wildlife and landscapes. It is part of the less visited southern safari circuit of Tanzania, lying south west of Dar es Salaam, and rivals the better known parks of the north. The relative quietness of the Selous makes it a first choice destination for discerning safari goers wanting an exclusive and private experience. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it features all the game and wildlife one could wish for.
Distance, time and modes of travel
The best part of this route is that there are direct flights which will save you a lot of time. The flight on average takes about 2.5 hours with a stop-and-go in Dar Es Salaam. The distance is about 210 km. Flights servicing the Selous will land at number of bush airstrips depending on the needs of the passengers.
If you wish to explore the Tanzanian plains, then it is advised to take this trip by road. You will be traveling 52 km more i.e. 262 km. The total time required in this regard would be 7 hours approx. From Zanzibar, you will be heading towards Dar es Salaam via ferry and from there all the way to Selous by road. If you are running out of time, then this mode of travel is not recommended at all.
Why Fly With Flightlink?
What your flight has to offer?
En route after departure from Zanzibar, you’ll have ample opportunity to spot the approach to Dar, and possibly the Pande Game Reserve which lies in the suburb of Dar es Salaam.
Departing Dar and headed SSW, you’ll have the Mikumi National park off to the distant right as you head down to the Selous and the beautiful Rufiji River. The Rufiji forms the lifeblood of the “Untouched Wilderness of Africa”.
Selous is served by multiple airstrips. Our flight crew will know which airstrip to drop passengers off and pick up depending on their accommodation booked.
The key airstrips are: Matambwe (SE3), Mtemere (SE4), Siwandu (SE5), Sumbazi (SE6), and Stieglers Gorge (STG0).
All are ‘bush’ airstrips with a gravel or grass surface. There are no passenger facilities at any of these strips. Your transfer will be waiting for you upon arrival, and will wait with you until you have boarded on departure.
Which airstrip to book for?
No-one flies into the Selous without first having booked their accommodation.
Which accommodation you have booked will determine which airfield you select to fly into or be picked up from. Your hotel will let you know which airfield is the right one for you.
Your flight crew will have on their passenger lists, and therefore their routing, your selected destination. If in any doubt, you can talk to the ground staff before boarding.
