Mount Kilimanjaro is a spectacle to behold and a bucket list item for many people. If you have the opportunity to climb to the top, you need to be prepared. The trek is not easy, but reaching the summit will be on top of your proudest moments list. If you are planning your trip, here is a packing list guide to help you prepare for your journey.
You will need to purchase a weather-resistant duffel bag or backpack that can easily store all your equipment, clothing, and essentials. Do not buy a hard shell suitcase because it will be difficult to carry and manage.
Although porters are available to carry your bags from camp to camp, you need only pack essential items. One important rule is to make sure your bag does not weigh more than 10 kilograms. The porters charge for every 15 kilograms, so even if your bag weighs 17 kilograms, you will have to pay for two porters.
Mount Kilimanjaro has five climate zones, so you need to pack clothes accordingly. The climate will range from equatorial rainforests to freezing weather. Choosing the suitable fabric will be critical in helping you reach the summit. Also, keep in mind that you will probably be wearing different clothes while you hike, relax, and sleep. It will always be essential to put on multiple layers to protect yourself from extreme weather conditions. A general guide for layering is to wear a non-cotton fabric as your first layer, an insulating fabric as your second layer, and a waterproof third layer. Make sure you also pack thermal gloves, waterproof gloves, and a beanie. You must also have good hiking books. Some items will be available for rent or purchase at the base camp, such as puffer jackets, boots, and other essential items.
The following list includes the essential equipment you will need.
You will also need to pack the following electronic items:
You can also keep your laptop, mobile phone, and any other electronic items with you.
Toiletries will also be critical for your trek
Make sure you pack an appropriate first-aid kit as well:
Some other items you can pack for your comfort include accessories, such as sunglasses, headphones, earplugs, caps, umbrellas, or any other item that you feel will make your time more enjoyable/comfortable. You can even pack snacks, such as trail mix, protein bars, and other items to keep your energy levels high.
