How to Get to Selous from Zanzibar

The largest game reserve in Africa, the Selous Game Reserve, has largely been untouched by man to the point that you will often have to go off the tracks to get to this wonderful area! It forms part of the southern safari circuit of Tanzania, which is the less frequented one. There are a large number of wildebeests, lions, buffaloes, elephants and giraffes in this area so if you’re looking for an almost exclusive peaceful trip to nature, then this is your best way to get one! Here are some of the top reasons you should visit Selous:

  • It’s not as busy as its northern counterparts. You’ll mostly have the views all by yourself! You don’t need to worry about it being too overcrowded because many tend to visit the northern counterparts, making the southern ones available for you.

  • Water activities are available at Selous! You can boat and fish in the Rufiji River as well as enjoy other water activities! The north is deprived of water in this sense, which gives Selous a big advantage!

  • You’ll get to spot lots of giraffes and lions here in their natural forms! The area has been largely unaltered by man, making it as close to nature as it gets!

There are 2 ways you can take if you want to head from Selous to Zanzibar, which are listed below:

  • Fly directly from Zanzibar to Selous

Many flights now go directly from Zanzibar to Selous with a quick stop in Dar es Salaam before same aircraft leaves again for Selous. The flights are seasonal so before you get too excited, first you need to see if the flight is available. The flight takes about an hour and a half and covers a distance of over 200 km. There are many runway landing strips in Selous to choose from, depending on where exactly in Selous you want to go. These include Beho Beho, Kiba, Matambwe, Mtemere, Siwandu, Stieglers and Sumbazi.

  • If you have a lot of time on your hand, you can travel from Zanzibar to Dar Es Salaam by a ferry and then you can take a road trip to Selous. You’ll have to cover a distance of about 260 km this way and it can take about 7 hours! The way is bumpy and uncomfortable, so it’s the least recommended way of getting to Selous from Zanzibar. However, if you’re up for some adventure and if you really want a ferry ride, then this isn’t a bad idea at all!

So, what are you waiting for? Head over to Selous now and enjoy the wonderful sights and activities it has to offer! For more details, you can also check out the expert guide on Selous Game Reserve Tanzania!
