Iringa - The heartlands
Visit Iringa and Ruaha
Iringa is a small city in the centre of Tanzania. The main industry here is agriculture and basket making. The baskets from the region are hand made and exported throughout Tanzania and to specialist markets around the world. Iringa is a quiet friendly city with hotels available in the centre for a reasonable rate that are clean, comfortable and safe.
While in Iringa, we would recommend visiting Isimila Stone Age Site, with a display of tools estimated to be over 60,000 years old, it is one of the most significant stone age finds ever identified. You can view the tools in the small museum and take a walk round the pillar area with a guide. Taxis from Iringa can take you to and from the site for a reasonable fare.
Within the Iringa region is Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's second largest National Park which plays host to an abundance of wildlife. Ruaha National Park is approximately 2-3hrs by car from Iringa airport.
Iringa Nduli airport is a small regional airport that has recently been updgraded from a dirt airstrip to a tarmac runway. The airport has very basic facilities and you will find Flightlinks check in desk at departures. The airport does not have free wifi or a cafeteria. It does have a departures area with seating and a public restroom with western style toilets.
The airport is located 13kms from the centre of Iringa on the road north to Dodoma. The trip from the centre to the airport generally takes 20 minutes by car. Parking at the airport is generally free but from time to time there may be charges imposed by the municipality.
