Zanzibar is one of the most beautiful and unique tourist destinations in the world. The people are hospitable, welcoming and proud of their heritage and island. The island is one of the most exotic, mystical and stunning locations in the world, and it offers luxury, comfort, culture, history, relaxation, and knowledge! It is the perfect vacation destination and should be visited by anyone who loves to travel, explore, relax, or have fun!


Food in Zanzibar is mouthwatering, as the cuisine is influenced by Arab, Indian, Chinese, Portugese, and African preparation and cooking styles! The Zanzibar archipelago is known as the spice islands. The cuisine has distinctive flavours, and it is easy on the palette. It offers a very enjoyable cuisine, with foods like the famous Zanzibar Pizza, delicious seafood like shellfish and prawns, grilled kebabs, chapatis, ginger chai, spiced potatoes, octopus curry, sugarcane juice, and the best tea and coffee in Africa. Here are some foods that must be tried!


  1. Coconut Bean Soup is made from coconut milk and shredded coconut, blended with tomatoes and beans, and then seasoned with spices. 
  2. Date Nut Bread is made from chopped dates and walnuts, and are ideal for the perfect breakfast.
  3. Ugali is a common dish in East Africa and can be eaten in various ways. Some locals would recommend eating with Mchuzi, a local soup, or with grilled meat, known as Nyama Choma.  
  4. Octopus curry contains a delicious combination of octopus, spices like coriander, turmeric, and creamy coconut gravy. This stylish meal is a must-have when a tourist is in Zanzibar!
  5. Biryani is a popular meal in Zanzibar, made with a variety of spices and blended with fish curry or meat, and may include mutton or beef.
  6. Plantain Soup is locally known as Mtori. It is cooked in chicken broth, and is served with roti, rice, chapati or bread.
  7. A visit to Zanzibar is incomplete without trying the Zanzibar pizza, which is one of the most popular street foods, and is prepared with a mix of egg, mayo, meat, and veggies. It can be found at Forodhani or in Stone Town.


The Darajani Market in Stone Town and Forodhani Night Food Market offer a variety of meats, seafood, and cuisines that tourists can wholeheartedly enjoy! with its abundance of spices such as cinnamon, pepper, and cloves. At Jambiani Beach, the Rock is a famous restaurant for trying Zanzibari food as it offers mouth watering delicacies, and seafood such as lobster, shrimp, and calamari. Lazuli Cafe, Taarab Restaurant, and Krishna Food House are famous places.


A vacation to Zanzibar is made special by a unique Spice Tour, as the region offers the colors and smells of a variety of spices, including cloves, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, garlic, cumin, turmeric, and lemongrass. During a spice tour, one of the exotic plants that tourists can expect to see is vanilla. They may also be able to find green, black, red, and white pepper. They can go to farmlands near Stone Town to see, smell, and taste aromatic plants and herbs. Going on a walking tour of the villages and plantations at Kizimbani or Kindichi is highly recommended for visitors in Zanzibar!
