The Julius Nyerere International Airport is one of the main airports in East Africa and is located in the former Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam. The airport serves both domestic and international flights.
International flights depart from terminal 2 while regional flights leave from terminal 1. The two terminals are separated by about one kilometre, and you may need a taxi to reach either because walking from one terminal to the other is not recommended.
The airport is located to the southwest of the city and is accessible through a major highway from the city. The highway can get very congested, so it is a good idea to plan to beat the congestion.
Getting to DAR airport is easy. Here are some options:
o Using taxis is the most preferred way. You can board a taxi from downtown Dar es Salaam and ride the 20 kilometres in about 45 minutes and pay from $30 usd.
o To get from terminal 1 to terminal two, you’ll need to pay $5.
o Your hotel can make arrangements for a shuttle bus to drop you at the airport. But this will have to be arranged in advance.
o If you use a private car, be prepared to pay a parking fee at the airport parking bay. It costs TZ1000 per hour. If you plan to park longer, you may need to notify airport management in advance.
All domestic flights depart from DAR and head to inland cities such as Arusha, Dodoma, Iringa, Tanga, Mwanza and the island airports of Zanzibar and Pemba. You can also get charter flights to Serengeti game reserve, Ruaha, and Selous. To avoid paying extra, let your taxi driver from the city head straight to terminal 1 where you will find porters waiting to assist with luggage. While you wait for your flight, you can get refreshments and cold drinks at the small cafes and shops in terminal 1.
In terminal 2, you can get a meal in one of the two restaurants that serve fast food. There is also a gift shop, a souvenir shop, and the information desk. Several shops selling mobile phones are scattered in terminal 2. You can also buy airline tickets from one of the several travel kiosks lined inside the terminal.
Inside both terminals 1 and 2, visitors can get:
An ATM in terminal 2 only
o A forex bureau in terminal 2 only
o Paid Wifi in restaurant
o Clean toilets available
o Facilities for disabled persons including wheelchairs.
o There is a sitting area in terminal 1 equipped with fans and a TV
o There is a lounge in terminal 2, a restaurant, a duty-free shop.
